The Maputaland coastal forest mosaic occupies the humid coastal strip along the Indian Ocean, situated in northern KZN, stretching up to the Mozambique border. An area rich in plant species, and with the coastal lakes included, provides perfect habitat for more than 470 bird species. The coastline is particularly untouched, provided unspoilt beaches with little other life around other than the few locals that come down to the sea for their daily fishing.
Rocktail beach Camp is situated within the confines of the Coastal Forest Reserve, tucked away under the canopy of the forest, within a short walk of the beach. The rooms are spread out along the edge of a coastal dune, affording several of the higher rooms amazing views over the forest canopy and to the sea. The central area offers a large sitting area with a lovely headed wrap-around verandah where most meals are served. The bar is also located here, with an amazing viewing deck offering generous views and a lovely area to have dinner under the stars!
A large swimming pool next to the main area allows hours and hours of entertainment for the kids, after spending as much time as you wish down at the beach.
Rocktail Beach Camp is never short of activities. Keep and eye on the activity board and you will see that there is always something happening. Snorkelling at Lala Neck at low tide is a huge favourite. Beautiful rocks pools offer plenty to see, or jump into the camp sea around the rock pools for some bigger schools of fish! Another favourite is a visit to Sibaya Lake for some truly exceptional birding, as well as some possibilities of seeing hippo and crocodiles. This trip also allows you the opportunity to visit the local village and see how the local tribes go about their daily lives, many of which, work at the lodge.
For the more adventurous, Mokarran Divers offers the opportunity to explore the local reefs. The diving here is exceptional, and the best part is that you will be the only divers on this reef so totally having the whole ocean to yourselves. There is also a good chance of seeing dolphins while out, and if you very lucky, a whaleshark. During whale season, the chances of seeing whales are also good.
Overall, Rocktail Beach Lodge offers a great getaway option, and is perfect for the family with plenty to keep everyone busy, or even not so busy, for those that simply want to relax and do nothing, with only the sounds of the ocean and forest to drown the everyday stress away!!
